4. What is capsular contracture?

The connective tissue or capsule that usually forms around the implant can thicken. This tissue hardening is referred to as capsular contracture or even capsular contracture.

The encapsulation of breast implants occurs more often after infection, hematoma, or seroma. It is also more common in placing breast implants under the pectoral muscle.

Symptoms range from chest bumps and mild discomfort to pain, deformation, and/or displacement of the implant. If pain and hardening are severe, additional surgery is required.

In this operation, either only the encapsulated tissue or the entire implant can be removed and replaced with a new one. It should be noted, however, that the Kapselkontraktur can then occur again.
